There are so many things to do and decisions to make. Moving can become an overwhelming process unless you find a way to organize, manage and simplify the process. The following list highlights just a few of the necessary steps to begin your moving process. - Find a moving company and schedule your moving date.
- Decide which items you want to take with you, give to family members and donate to charity.
- Make a list of repairs to be completed and find a Realtor® to sell the existing home.
- Make a list of everyone you need to notify about your move: family, friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.
- Contact utility and related companies (gas, electric, water, telephone, cable, etc.) for service disconnect/connect at your old and new addresses. However, remember to keep phone and utilities connected at your current home throughout moving day.
- Pack items you won't need one month before your move.
- Check your homeowner's insurance policies to see if moving is covered. Be sure your new home is protected by transferring fire, theft and other personal property insurance.
- Arrange to have major appliances serviced if/before you move them.
- Collect all important papers and put them in a safe place.
